You Want To Vote In This Election

Any one of us, our business, our family or child, could have a case in front of the County Court at Law #1 of Angelina County. Your judge may decide the custody of your child, how much time will you be allowed to visit your child, or what support you will pay to support your children. The judge may determine the guilt or innocence of a criminal defendant or what appropriate punishment should be required, if convicted. This judge will have the power to determine if a young person has engaged in delinquent conduct that may require removing the young person from his or her home. Persons alleged to be mental ill will have to rely on this judge to be cautious in rendering a judgment that may brand them an incompetent person who is no longer able to act for themselves in their personal business. The decision that this judge makes in any one case affects the people or businesses in that case, and may be precedent for future cases. As citizens of Angelina County, we want and need good judge and well functioning court.

Although judges are public officials, voters often know little about judges and judicial candidates when it comes time to vote. Voting without information is a misuse of our right to vote, and not voting because we would rather not guess wastes that right. We as voters should be responsible to find out and know facts about our candidates’ qualifications and experience that would warrant receiving our vote. Poorly qualified and inexperienced judges may result in bad judicial decisions that affect the lives of individuals and families for many years to come.

In a nutshell: integrity, judicial temperament, diligence, and professional competence.

+ INTEGRITY- Integrity refers to a candidate’s character, ethics and general reputation in the community. A candidate with integrity demonstrates fairness and independent judgment, honestly and trustworthiness, compliance with the law, and a commitment to equal justice under the law.

+ JUDICIAL TEMPERAMENT- A candidate with judicial temperament is dignified and even-tempered, respectful to others, courteous, tactful, patient, yet firm, objective and even-handed, open-minded, and compassionate.

+ DILIGENCE- A diligent candidate is hard working and efficient, reliable and punctual, and well prepared for pretrials and hearings.

+ PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE- To be a competent judge, a candidate should have strong legal knowledge and analytical ability, sound personal and professional judgment, ability to communicate effectively and/or distinguished accomplishments in a relevant field at law, particularly in the court for which the candidate seeks office. The candidate should not demonstrate, or tolerate bias and prejudice.

Vote Counts

Why Vote?

Because in America, that is the way we change things. That is the way we reform the system. That is the way we guard against the threats to our liberties and exercise our responsibilities. That is the way that we keep America free.

Candidates come and candidates go. Elections are won and lost. Sometimes we elect crooks and nobodies and, every once in while, a statesman who strides across the Congress or, from the Oval Office, across the world like a colossus, showing the world what it means to be a free people and, more importantly, why freedom matters.

And, for the same reason, it matters that you vote. It is your voice – and the only person who can silence your voice is you. So applaud, complain, march, protest, petition – these are your rights but, without your vote, they are meaningless actions, backed up by nothing.
